Stability with Water Ballast

A potential builder of the Didi 950 asked me a question about stability with water ballast. He could not find an explanation on the Internet describing the effects of water ballast on a boat when capsized, so here it is.

After looking at the stability curve, he was concerned that the stability curve with water ballast to windward, the normal position for sailing in strong winds, has a very large area of negative stability. He wanted to know how that affects the time that the boat will take to right itself if capsized. This is a natural question following the amount of discussion that has been happening after our recent capsize in the Didi 38 "Black Cat" and the very rapid manner in which she returned to upright.

Shown below is the stability graph of the Didi 950 in fully loaded condition; click on the diagram to enlarge it. This is the condition of lowest stability due to the inclusion of crew, stores, liquids and many other weights that are above the centre of gravity (CG) of the boat. There are three curves shown. When looking at the graph, consider that the area enclosed by each curve above the horizontal 0 line is a measure of the energy that is required to take the boat from upright to the point of vanishing stability (AVS) where the curve crosses the 0 line. Until the AVS is reached, the boat will return to upright if no additional heeling force is applied to it.  Beyond the AVS the boat will continue to full capsize unless there is another force being applied that will return it to the positive side of the AVS.

The green curve is with ballast tanks empty, so akin to sailing a boat that has no water ballast. This curve is very similar in form to that of "Black Cat", with the area enclosed by the curve above the 0 line many times greater than the area enclosed by the curve below the 0 line. She would right herself very quickly with no water ballast. The red curve is with the windward ballast tanks filled, good for powering to windward or power-reaching in strong conditions. The blue curve is with the leeward ballast tanks filled. One would not sail her like this but it is a situation that could result from an accidental gybe in strong winds.
Didi 950 Stability Graph. Click to enlarge.
With no wind or waves and the ballast tanks on one side filled, the boat will not rest upright. It will heel over until it stabilises at a heel angle that places the CG vertically in line with the centre of buoyancy (CB). That will be the nearest crossing of the curve with the 0 line, which is at 5 degrees in this case, seen on the blue curve. Add some wind to bring the boat to 0 degrees heel and the righting moment that is working is the point where the red curve hits the left edge of the graph. Without water ballast the boat must heel to 6 degrees to reach the same righting moment. That is where the power benefit is coming from with water ballast, the boat will sail more upright than with empty tanks, in the same wind strength.

Note that all three curves are closely bunched when the boat is heeled 90 degrees. This is a knock-down situation, probably from losing control when driving hard downwind under spinnaker. The mast is horizontal but not in the water. This bunching of the curves at 90 degrees is because of the position of the ballast tanks in this design, low in the boat fairly close to the vertical CG. There would be a bigger spread if the tanks were located high up under the deck.

The red curve shows the benefit of increased righting moment when the windward tank is filled. There is considerably greater gain in stability shown by the red curve than lost stability, shown by the blue curve, when ballast is on the wrong side.

All three curves show that the wind alone cant capsize the boat. When the mast hits the water there is still considerable righting moment available for all three situations. If the boat is in large waves and hit by a big one while knocked flat, the added energy from the wave can capsize the boat in all three situations.

It seems counter-intuitive but the condition most likely to invert the boat under wave action after a knock-down is with the water ballast to windward (red), i.e. the condition in which the boat will be sailed in strong winds. This is because after the water ballast passes beyond the point where it is vertically above the overall CG of the boat that extra weight is on the wrong side of the CG and is helping to capsize the boat rather than to bring it back to upright. It pulls the red curve below the green curve and reduces the AVS from 133 degrees to 122 degrees.

Overall it takes more energy to capsize the boat from upright with water ballast than without, evaluated by comparing the area enclosed by the red curve with the area enclosed by the green curve. When the area enclosed by the blue curve is compared with the green curve, there is very little difference. It will take a similar amount of energy to capsize the boat without water ballast and with water ballast on the wrong side, when going from upright. Ironically, the wrong side has the greatest amount of reserve stability after a knock-down and has the greatest angle of AVS, so it is the condition least likely to capsize after a knock-down.

Back to our capsizing boat. Once past 122 degrees it is into a big range of negative stability that shows as the area enclosed by the red curve below the 0 line, taking it all the way to 180 degrees, i.e. totally upside-down. But see that the curve does not return to 0 at 180 degrees, which means that it is unstable at that angle. Same as happens when the boat is upright, the water ballast off to one side prevents the boat from resting at the 180 degree position. It has to rotate to where the CG is vertically aligned with the inverted CB. That is at the point where the curve crosses the 0 line. If the red curve is extended to the zero line it will be to the same angle that the blue curve crosses,  i.e. 160 degrees.

There is no windward or leeward when the boat is upside-down, the sails are under water. The boat is stable in the 160 degree position, so leaning 20 degrees to one side of upside-down. It needs to get past the nearest zero crossing to come back to upright. The boat doesnt care which way it goes. It needs a lot of energy to go back the way that it came along the red curve but very little energy to get to the 140 degree AVS crossing of the blue curve. With the motion from just a small wave it will continue past that 140 degree point. Once that point is passed, the righting moment of the blue curve takes control and will return her to upright. If the rig is still standing then the sails will fill and she will be back into the stability situation shown by the red curve. She has capsized along the red curve and righted herself along the blue curve.
In essence, it will take a lot less energy for the boat to right itself with water ballast than without, so she should right herself more quickly with the water ballast. The difference is that without water ballast she can go either way from inverted to upright but with water ballast she has to go full circle.

Carbon oars are in style at Clint Chase Boatbuilder! These are a pair made by Clints students. They can made at any size, shape, and part of any length oar. They make most sense on 8 or longer oars where outboard weight must be kept to a minimum.

Other news: coming into the shop will be a vintage Flying Fifteen the building of which was supervised by Uffa Fox himself in the ate 1940s. Photographs will be forthcoming. Helena Gets a Notion

For all the sailing couples out there... A new series of stories told from two sides: his and hers! Its all part of my No-Drama Sailing collection. Wed love to hear comments from the sailor in your family (male or female) and -- perhaps more importantly -- from the sailing spouse. Please leave your comments below!

So it was finally here: Spring 2012. And what a spring it had been. The warmest on record. Perfect sailing weather. But the Blue Moon had been stuck at the dock with all her spars and sails out of her.

Id had a good plan for a normal winter: redo all her running rigging so shed be strong and easy to sail. It was a plan Id been working on for over a year -- since returning from my long voyage home. And now I was done. Id added powerful reefing gear to the main; figured out how to rig the mizzen so it would be easy to raise and lower; and Id rebuilt her boomkin so it didnt interfere with tilting the outboard out of the water. Fantastic!

Id replace old halyards, figured out a way to set my flying jib without flying overboard, even learned how to set the topsail, which probably hadnt been set by several past owners.

In short, the Blue Moon was ready for spring and I was raring to take my darling Helena out sailing.

Funny thing was, I couldnt seem to pin her down to a time...

Now Helena is insanely busy. Shes a very popular piano teacher with over 60 weekly students. Plus shes an avid gardener and the spring had been just as good for gardening as for sailing. So I didnt push her. I had plenty of things to work on, including planning the refit of the Blue Moons cabin to make it a bit more wife-friendly. We planned to sail out east in the fall, and I wanted the boat to be cozy and comfortable for my favorite woman.

But eventually, Helenas busyness started to seem like reluctance. And that raised a big red flag for me.

I know a lot about women and boats. My father and uncle were sailors. As a kid, I watched my mother and aunt slowly detach themselves from sailing, until it became an all male thing.

My mother, in particular, became very boat-shy, and I thought I knew why. Though my father loved sailing, I think even he would admit he wasnt very good at it. Women like to feel theyre in good hands. In safe hands. With my father at the wheel, no one was safe. When the going got rough -- as it did, occasionally -- my father fell apart. He panicked. He yelled. He looked scared.

My mom took the only reasonable action, under the circumstances. She refused to step foot on a boat ever again. Any boat.

Unfortunately, this is an all-to-common problem. Im pretty sure its the reason there werent many women sailors in the Age of Sail. Lousy food; worse sleeping quarters; and the French or Spanish always shooting at you.

"How can you call that fun?" I can just hear my female ancestors ask their sail-crazy male relations.

But Helena was different. Helena is athletic. She relishes hard, dirty work, like sanding decks. She loves to travel. In short, shes the kind of woman whos ready for anything. Even going up the mast. Im far too much a gentleman to ever suggest a lady ascend a mast, particularly in my somewhat rickety home-made bosuns chair. But after watching me go up, Helenas reaction was "That looks like fun. Can I try?"

Ah, what a woman...

Helena in her foulies
And Im different. I might not be an expert on wooden boats, but I am an expert on women. Or at least Helena. Ive always been careful not to scare her on the boat. Never take her out when theres more than a 10-15 knot wind blowing (the Blue Moon is a heavy-displacement gaffer, so this is a mild breeze for her.) I know that just one scare can put a woman off sailing for life. Ive seen it with my own eyes. Not going to do it!

And once Helena gets out there, I know she enjoys it. Ive seen it in her eyes as she stands on deck in her foul weather gear, looking towards the far horizon, dreaming, I know, of distant shores...

"Its probably just a scheduling problem," I thought. "We just need to set aside some time. Easy-peasy."

So the next morning, I cornered Helena in the kitchen, having coffee, and broached the subject.

"Hey, I was thinking we should set aside a couple mornings a week for sailing," I said, brightly.

"Mmmmm, yeah," she said. "Wait. You dont mean this week?"

"Yes, what mornings do you have free?"

"Not sure, exactly... Ive got quite a bit on..."

"Because you know how youre always saying, we just need to make time, to fit things in?"

"Yes..."

"Thats what we need to do. Set aside maybe two mornings a week to go sailing. Otherwise, things happen, we never get the time, yada-yada-yada..."

"I dont like sailing."

"What about Tuesdays and Thursdays?"

"John, I dont like sailing."

Well, that stopped me for a moment, I can tell you.

"Is this about that one sail last fall?" I asked. "Because you know that was just to give Nick a thrill."

Nick is our son, and I had reefed just a bit too late on a blustery day last fall, and a 15 knot gust had put the rail in the water for a second, and the fear of God in 64" Nicks green eyes. Helena hadnt said a word at the time, and I was proud a little heeling hadnt scared her.

I paused and said, "It was just for fun."

"I dont like that kind of fun."

"We were in no danger. The Blue Moon can take a lot more than 15 knots of wind. Its not like there were whitecaps or anything."

"Its scary for me," she said. "I dont like it."

Not like it? What could she possibly mean? I must admit I was befuddled at that moment, but then I had an idea. A real brainwave.

"I know what you need," I said.

Id been meaning to give Helena sailing lessons this year, anyway. Of course she was scared. She didnt understand enough about sailboats to know what was dangerous, and what wasnt. It was all a big mystery to her. She had no control over what was happening on the boat. No one likes to be a helpless passenger. But if she learned how to sail...

"Sailing lessons," I said, proudly. "Thats what you need."

"But..."

"Ive been thinking about this for a long time, and know just how to do it. It will be great."

"Im not really good with that sort of thing..."

"And you know, a wife who knows how to sail is the best insurance a sailor can have. If I fall overboard, you can turn back and rescue me. Thats super important."

"Fall overboard?"

I could see the thought had never crossed her mind. She had that much faith in my sailing abilities.

What a woman!

"Sailing lessons start tomorrow!" I said.

Helenas story...

Spring is finally here!  Not that we missed the warm weather much.  This winter was very warm and John and I kept busy with our favorite hobbies: I practiced on my piano, while John worked on something in the basement. Exactly what, I didn’t quite understand.

He spent the winter running up and down the stairs covered with saw dust and sweat.  Most of the time he would interrupt his running with words like “I am going to Home Depot”, “Oh good, my rope has arrived!”, “Honey, I got a new bandsaw, do you want to see it?”, “Got to go out to get some wood.”, “Helenaaaaa, have you seen my fid?”, whatever that is, and very, very frequently “I am going to the boat!”

Ah, the boat. The Blue Moon. The other woman in his life. I almost feel jealous. Before Blue Moon it was me, me, and me.  Now it’s me, her, and me with her. So, like any good wife, I let it go a bit further, pretending this love affair won’t last, he will get tired of her and come back to me…

Wishful thinking.

Back to ‘Spring is here!’

Yay! Time to start working in the garden, plan the new vegetable beds, go to nurseries, sow and transplant, prune and weed.

John is still running back and forth to the boat, trying to make us (me and her) both happy.  With the spring comes the wind, with the wind, the sailing, with the sailing the hesitant but ever present question: Would you like to go for a sail?

Go out for a sail?  Wait.  Zzzzzzzzzzzip - rewind.

Last summer, we did quite a bit of sailing on the Blue Moon. I loved working on the boat, but  John knew I didn’t have much sailing experience: Once, as a teenager in Brazil, I’d been on a small catamaran. It capsized. Another time, I went sailing on a big boat with some friends. We got stuck on a sandbar. Being in situations where I have no idea of what to do, scares me.

Now, John is a sensitive man and a fine sailor, so his approach was very gentle. Gradually, over the course of the summer, he tried to convince me that sailing is not so scary. But despite his care and skill, several escapades shook my confidence. Two examples.

Sailing escapade one: my very first sail on the Blue Moon. It’s a drizzly spring day. To make sure I stay dry, John suggests I put on some foul gear.

Have you ever put some on? Oh my. I couldn’t move very comfortably. The cold plastic lining made me cold, so I put on some cashmere sweaters to warm up, but then I looked like a big yellow buoy, just to keep with the nautical theme.  Did I mention it was bright neon yellow? Oh yes. “It is that color because if you fall overboard it’s easy to find you,” John said. Nice.

Once we got out of the channel, and into the bay, John lovingly mentioned that we should go over some safety procedures, like they do in the cruise liners.

“First darling, if I fall overboard, throw anything that floats towards me.”

OK, I think. So when he goes overboard, now I have to look for some cushion or life jacket to throw after him. In the meantime, this boat is heading out to sea without a captain, or anyone who has any idea about how to stop it, or steer it.

But once I throw the cushions and lifejackets overboard, don’t I have to go back and find him?

“No problem. The boat will stop by itself, because it will turn itself into the wind if you just let go of the tiller,” he says. Or something like that. I didn’t really understand how it would work. But I get that I don’t have to worry about the boat sailing off to Greenland by itself. It will stop. Good.

“Oh, and by the way, don’t worry about all the flapping of the sails and the constant back and forth of the boom. Just go down to the cabin and call the Coast Guard on the radio.”

Radio? Flapping sails, swinging boat and boom? I don’t know how to use the radio!

“No problem,” he says. “It’s easy, just turn it on by (something… I can’t remember what), then (do something else) to connect to channel 9 (or was it 6?) and the Coast Guard will come and everything will be fine. If I havent swum over and climbed aboard by then. Not that I’m going to fall overboard!” he says. Ha-ha-ha. Big smile. “Now let’s get on with some sailing!”

After the preliminary safety instructions, unlike on the big cruise liners, where we all go down and have some Margaritas, we on the Blue Moon continued our journey into open water. I was ready to go back to the dock by then. I was exhausted. But that rainy day turned out not only rainy, but windy.

John was thrilled!! It was our lucky day. “First time out and we get perfect wind,” he said.

The wave were a bit too big for me, even though I didn’t have to sail.

Wait! Actually, I couldn’t have sailed, even if I wanted to. I was holding on to the sides of the boat with both hands, just so I didn’t slip off, and my feet were stuck against whatever surface they could get a grip on.

John was so excited with the sailing, that he didn’t notice the fear that was taking over me.

The water gushed into the boat through something John called ‘the scuppers’ because we were slanted, and the waves were so big that water also sprayed over the front. I was glad to be wearing that horrible foul weather gear, but all I could do is rehearse in my mind the “man overboard” steps. The more I thought about it the more afraid I was; the more afraid I was, the more I didn’t like sailing.

I don’t like this sport, I thought. It’s not for me, and I don’t think any of my friends would like it, either.

We made it back. I was dry and John did not fall overboard. Euff! I will take that Margarita now.

On the way home, John was very excited. The sailing was great and he couldn’t wait to go on the next one.  He kept reassuring me that once I learn how to sail, I wouldn’t be afraid anymore. It would be real fun. Oh boy.

Sail escapade two: our 6’4” son Nick was visiting for a fall weekend. He had taken some sailing lessons and was excited to come out with us. I try to convince John that this would be a great opportunity for some male bonding, and that the two of them should go and have manly-man times together.

Fail. Here I am on the boat again. John promised it would be really nice and relaxing. I fell for it.

The wind picks up, the white caps are everywhere and I can tell John wants to give Nicholas a real taste of what sailing is about.  He puts Nicholas at the helm and goes to put some more sails up.  Water gushes through the scuppers; I am holding onto everything (again);  I don’t want my son to see me cry so we keep going.

Back onto the land, I promised myself I would never set a foot on a boat, ever again.

We went out a couple more times. I can’t remember them very well, either because I decided to drink those Margaritas before sailing or my memory mercifully blocks it out.

So, that was last summer, and now spring is here, again! John is making plans and asking me to go sailing. I must get the courage to tell him about my fear of sailing, about the pain of having my nails gripping the wood, the constant mental stress that something bad is going to happen.

Did I mention the boat has no bathroom?

OK, so I have been making excuses, I have been busy, but I have to tell him the truth.

Over coffee this morning, John asks me again, “It’s a beautiful day, slight breeze (yeah, been there, been back, luckily), would you like to come for a sail?”

Those beautiful brown eyes looking hopefully at me… I have no choice but to come out with the truth:  “John, I don’t like sailing.”

He looks at me as if I just told him I was having an affair.

After regrouping, he asks “Is this about that one sail last fall?”

One sail? How about all of them?

I can see him thinking, trying to grasp what I am saying. “I don’t understand. We had fun, I was careful, Nicholas had a great time!”

While I am trying to come up with words that will explain without hurting, John has an idea. I can see it in his eyes.

“Sailing lessons!” he says. “That’s what you need.

He explains to me that once I knew how to sail, I’d feel more in control, and wouldn’t be so frightened.

He almost has me convinced, when he mentions something about falling overboard, again.

Men!

I will agree to the sailing lessons, I think. But John will learn a few things too, this summer: about women.

“Sailing lessons start tomorrow,” I say.

Design 2253 Tartan 37

on Tuesday, January 27, 2015

The Tartan 37 was introduced in 1976 and was produced until 1989. They were well built boats that came at a reasonable price tag and offered modern styling and good performance and was offered in three different keel configurations: deep, shoal "Scheel keel", and centerboard.

Consider this for a moment: If we compare the Tartan 37 to Finisterre (the mother of all famous centerboard boats) the T37 is 15" shorter overall, has 6" more beam, is 3,000 lbs lighter and carries 1,200 lbs more ballast. She has less sail area than Finisterre (not if we discount the mizzen on Finisterre) but it is a much higher aspect ratio (and thus more efficient) rig.

She is a great performing boat and still represents a good value on the used boat market. Approximately 450 T37s were built during the production run.

Here are the plans for the centerboard version.

Palynodie Design 1673

Here is a boat that is very well regarded and I would say one of Olins favorites. She was built in France by the Eduard Chabert Shipyard of Marseilles for the Mayor of Marseilles, Gaston Defferre, and launched in 1962. She has a very small keel area resulting in low wetted surface and proved quick in light air. She was most likely a handful in heavy weather, in terms of directional stability downwind and most especially with spinnaker set.

Here are the plans.

The boat was later modified separating the rudder from the keel. Heres an image of that modification. Im going to surmise that the reason for this modification was in great part due to the directional stability issues I mention above.

Weve turned 80

About 9 years ago we turned 50 and had a big party. Now we have turned 80. How did we age so fast, another 30 in less than 10 years?

The answer is that we have now sold our boat designs to customers in 80 countries. That is the power of the internet. It allows us to reach, communicate with and support people in almost any country in the world. We are able to support a builder in a small country on the other side of the world just as easily as a builder around the corner from us.

As long as we are able to communicate by email, the builder can send me questions and I can respond in a reasonably short time. That is easy enough if the builder is fairly comfortable with English but it has sometimes presented challenges when neither of us understands the language of the other. On-line translation services have helped tremendously, allowing me to translate the questions into English, write the answer then translate back into the builders language before sending the email. The translation sometimes needs a bit of interpretation because of the translation program using general terms rather than boating terms but the message does get through.

When I was a kid, my parents used to talk of Outer Mongolia as a really out-of-the-way place, even more unreachable than Timbuktu. They were right, of course, but the world has changed. Now we have 11 boats, from 15 to 43ft, being built or already in the water, in a city named Irkutsk. This city is on the shores of Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake in the world. It is more than 1 mile deep in places, holds 20% of all of the fresh water in the world (as much water as all of the Great Lakes together) and it would take the Amazon River 5 years to fill it. Irkutsk is in the middle of Siberia, Russia, to the North of Mongolia. I find it amazing that we have so many customers in a remote place like that. Their water is frozen almost half the year, so they have a short sailing season. That doesnt stop them from wanting to build boats. Read more about the amazing Lake Baikal.

The boat above is a Didi 26 being built in Irkutsk by Ivan Vasilyev. A bigger sister, the Didi 38, is being built by Stanislav Pechenkin.

We have other boats being built in many other places that are seldom, if ever, heard of. You can see the countries where we have sold plans on our countries page.

It is growing cold here but not as cold as Siberia, I am sure. We have snow flurries in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow will be the day for adding Christmas lights to the outside of the house. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Transom Work Part 3

When I started the transom back in December, I wasnt planing on the weather turning cold for so long. Winters in central Texas have been fairly mild most years since I moved here. Fortunately, it isnt a solid mass of cold days and we get periodic warm spells of 60 degrees or more. In fact, yesterday, it reached 81 degrees! These warm interludes allowed me to make progress, albeit, with waiting spells in between.

The last time I posted a build article, I had completed adding the first motor board. Because I want to make the transom strong enough to handle a larger outboard, I elected to add a second 3/4" motor board. There was some agonizing over the details of this. I have no previous experience with boats or outboard motors. I wasnt sure  just how thick I could go. I originally considered using 1/2" for the second board, but that would have required me to buy another sheet of plywood. Getting plywood is always a problem because none of the local lumber yards provide the product that I am looking for. The nearest supplier is in Houston which is a four hour drive. Therefore getting the wood here involves additional expense in addition to the considerable cost of the wood.

I had 3/4" plywood on hand and was hoping to use it. A visit to a local boatyard and discussions with others gave me confidence to move forward with the thicker wood. Gluing this second piece down required additional considerations. First there is the matter of the knee which braces the transom to the keel. Its attached using epoxy resin and 6" long 3/8" silicon bronze bolts. If I had simply placed the knee on top of the second motor board, the bolts would not have been long enough. I conferred with some other builders on this and decided to add a slot in the board .

Another consideration was the eventual bolt pattern and location for the outboard mount. I had trouble finding these at first, but eventually I learned that most outboards use a standard bolt pattern. Once I learned what this was, I was able to proceed.

A third consideration were the screws that I used to hold the board down (in addition to the epoxy resin) . They needed to be slightly offset from the screws used to hold the first board down. And finally, I needed to insure that all the screws and eventual structure would work with whatever cut out I needed for the outboard motor. The cut out has to be a certain minimum width to allow clearance for the motor to turn. It also needs to be a certain vertical distance from the bottom of the transom so that the motor eventually lines up correctly when installed.

Fortunately, the choices here are also standardized to 15, 20, and 25 inch motor shaft lengths. But which motor to plan on? I have somewhat solidified plans on the eventual motor I plan on using. A short shaft motor (15") is nice because it allows the motor to be low enough to be partially hidden by the boat structure. But it also requires a fairly deep cut out which I dont like.

A 25" motor (extra long shaft) provides a much shallower cut out, which is good. But the motor sticks way up in the air, is heavier, and are not as commonly available. I suspect they are more expensive as well.

Ultimately I decided on the 20" shaft length as a good compromise. Ill cover the cut out more in a bit, but I had to allow for this when laying out the screws for the second board. One additional detail was that I wanted to do the cut out after gluing all the boards down. This way I could avoid having to try to keep all the parts aligned when gluing. With all these questions answered, I proceeded to add the second board.

The additional thickness of the second board and the cut out I would eventually add meant that my building form was going to need modification to allow clearance and to provide support to hold the transom. Basically I needed to cut a section out of each building form leg  at the back end and replace the small supporting blocks of wood with a longer piece of 2 x 4 lumber.

The cut out for the motor , as mentioned earlier, needed to be a certain size. I had worked out the width back in January so that the eventual motorwell sides would line up with other structure in the hull. It slightly exceeded the minimum width needed for the engines I had in mind. The depth of the cut is determined by measuring the motor shaft length (20") down from the keel point on the transom. It needs to be measured perpendicular to the keel rather than along the transom surface since the motor is mounted perpendicular as well. Remember that the transom is mounted at a 14 degree angle from vertical. Therefore, the cut out depth was slightly longer than 20". I also wanted to provide room for an eventual solid wood cap on the inner edge of the cutout to hide and protect the plywood edges. So this additional thickness was added to the depth of the cut out.

Then came the hard part, making the cut. I always get nervous doing this because a screw up at this point would have set me back considerably in money and time. So I spent a bunch of time rechecking all my measurements and assumptions. The cut out was laid out on the transom skin and nice rounded corners were added. Then I broke out the jig saw and proceeded to cut.

Well, as careful as I was, I still managed to slightly exceed the cut lines in a small area. Fortunately, the repair for this was easy and would eventually be covered by the edge cap. I first had to sand the cut out to its final lines. Then using some aluminum tape and two steel rulers for support, I added thickened epoxy to fill in the damaged area. Later, this was sanded to blend in with the surrounding wood and the repair worked out just fine.

The transom was temporarily re-mounted to the building form to make sure my modifications were correct and to finalize the position of the knee. I determined that the angle of the knee outer edges needed to be slightly reduced. They were at 16 degrees but needed to be at 14 degrees. The bench sander remedied this problem.

Before encapsulating the inner surface of the transom, I wanted to add the knee This required drilling holes for the 3/8" bolts. This is another of those steps you have to do that make you nervous. When drilling through thicker materials, it is is imperative that the holes be perpendicular to the surfaces or the bolts will not install correctly. I have quite a bit of experience with this from my previous aircraft maintenance days so I utilized a method I was comfortable with to accomplish this. Basically you use two vertical references to align the drill, and then start with smaller drills and step up to the final size. Then just work slowly and try to keep the drill perpendicular to the two vertical references. I used a combination square and the other leg of the knee for this purpose.

Then the holes needed to be transferred to the transom. I wanted to insure that the plywood would not tear out when the drill broke through the opposite side so I used a piece of wood clamped in place on the backside. Again I worked slowly and didnt try to force the drill through too fast.

The knee is attached using thickened epoxy and the two 6" carriage bolts. The heads of the bolts are on the outside skin of the transom. I wanted to maintain as much strength as possible here so I elected not to counter bore under the bolt heads. I plan on adding mahogany planking on  the exterior surface of the skin so I can cover these bolt heads by simply making small clearance areas in the inner surface of the planking before I epoxy them into position.

The knee was epoxied into position and the bolts inserted and assembled. The knees outer edges had to be slightly notched where it matched up to the transom frame because that wood is slightly thicker than the plywood motor board. The edge that matches up to the keel needed to be aligned with the notch in the transom frame.

And here is an older photo that shows how the knee will eventually look when the transom is attached to the boat. The motor boards are not in this older photo.

So all that remains on the transom is to do a bit of glue clean up and encapsulate the inner surface with three coats of epoxy. The outer surface, as previously mentioned, will be planked, so no need to coat that surface right now. Once this process is completed, the transom will be re-mounted to the building form and I will begin the process of installing the keel.

So until next time.......................

Bass Tracker

Bass Tracker

The company dates back the late 1970s when John Morris (founder of Bass Pro Shops) came up with the idea of selling a ready-to-fish boat. The hull design was different than other hull designs at the time. It included a custom trailer, fish finder, trolling motor and power-matched outboard motor. The boat was released in 1978, and was met with great success, launching the Tracker Boat company. Over time, Tracker Boats acquired other boat brands and ultimately the Tracker Boat Company became the Tracker Marine Group. Tracker sells their boats at Bass Pro Shops retail stores, retail centers owned by Tracker, or private retailers.
